Traveling by motorhome is a way of experiencing freedom, adventure and contact with nature. But it also implies a series of responsibilities, planning and adaptation to the circumstances of each moment. If you want to know what a typical day in a motorhome is like, keep reading this article where we tell you about our experiences and give you some tips to make your trip unforgettable.
How to start the day in a motorhome
Thanks to the elements they carry, motorhomes are quite autonomous home-vehicles, but it must be borne in mind that water or electricity are not infinite. Therefore, one of the first things to do in the morning is to check the level of the batteries, water or gas. They are the basic resources that allow us to have electricity, hot water and heating in our mobile home. If any of them are low, we will have to find a place to recharge or change them. And, although it is not the most pleasant thing in the world, we will have to check how full the chemical toilet is in case we need to find a specific place to empty it.
Another important aspect is to ventilate the motorhome well, opening the windows and skylights, to avoid condensation and bad smells. It is also convenient to collect a little space, to have more comfort and order. Remember that it is a small space and clutter can make you feel more overwhelmed!
Breakfast time
Breakfast is one of the most pleasant moments of the day in a motorhome. We can prepare it in our kitchen, equipped with a stove, fridge, sink and utensils. Or we can choose to buy something at a local bakery or supermarket in the place where we are staying. Enjoying the gastronomy of the towns through which we pass is one of the great attractions of this type of trip.
plan the day
After breakfast, it is time to decide what we are going to do during the day. We can stay in the same place and explore its surroundings, or perhaps drive to another destination enjoying a route through various points of interest.
Whatever our choice, we must take into account some aspects:
- Time: You have to check the weather forecast to find out if it's going to rain, be cold or windy. This can condition our route, our parking and our activities.
- The traffic: it is advisable to avoid rush hours, traffic jams and bad roads. Nobody wants to spend their days off stuck in traffic.
- Parking and/or place to spend the night: You have to find a safe, legal and suitable place to park and/or spend the night with your motorhome. We can use apps like Park4night or Campercontact to find free or paid areas, campsites or parking lots. In some countries, such as France, the ideal is to arrive at the place where you will spend the night before lunchtime, which is when there is movement of vehicles –which leave free places–. It is not usually convenient to leave it for the last minute because we can find ourselves with a shortage of places to sleep.
- Leisure: We must choose the activities that we like the most and that suit our budget and our pace. We can go hiking, cycling, visit monuments, museums or towns, go to the beach or the mountains, etc.
How to end the day in a motorhome
At the end of the day, we can enjoy a quiet dinner in our motorhome, cooking ourselves or buying prepared food. The important thing is not to leave leftover food or garbage inside the motorhome, to avoid bad odors and insects.
Before going to sleep, you have to check that everything is properly closed and turned off: doors, windows, lights, etc. And remember... you have to respect the silence and privacy of the neighbours, if there are any!
Sleeping in a motorhome is a unique experience, which allows us to feel close to nature and the stars. If you are considering enjoying an experience like this, remember that in our rental section you can find different models of vehicles for a motorhome trip.
